Brain Enhancement Research and Christian Reality Checks

Author: Lance Winslow

Recently in an Online Think Tank Forum an Atheist and Christian discussed some of the latest discoveries in the life sciences pertaining to cognitive human brain enhancement. There are many interesting and even fascinating innovations in the bio sciences and in the fields of NanoTech, BioTech, artificial intelligence and computer sciences.

One think tank member indicated that he would like to be smarter thru the use of these technologies and stated so. The Christian Scholar and Devout Religious Follower stated:

You do not get smarter by modifying your brain, you get wiser by modifying your principles and values, your world views and self-knowledge, by fearing God and asking Him for more wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

This brought on further thought on this matter at the think tank and the atheist countered with these comments:

Well you must define smarter then to accurately make your point. A more efficient brain that works faster is smarter. This is how I define smarter. One who can get to the answer or solve a problem faster and more efficiently using the same knowledge as another would be smarter as I understand my use of the word.

Thus if you modify the brain to work more efficiently with faster recall more in formation closer at hand and work it at higher efficiencies, with better intake and frequency manipulation then you surely could become smarter. I do not see how you could argue with that.

What would god or gods, or he, she, it or they have to do with any of this? Indeed lets hypothetically say that there was a god? In this case, he has done a piss poor job designing your virtual reality life experience game and he should be held accountable? Dont you think?

Interesting indeed the dichotomy of thoughts on this subject, which I observed. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you have ideas along this line of thinking, either way? Perhaps something that was not discussed here? What do you think God had in mind with regards to intelligence? Do you believe man can find ways to artificially increase cognition? Love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Think on this in 2006.
